Ein viel einfacherer aber nicht so offensichtlicher Weg klappt aber:

1) Installiere das Paket: os-prober
2) Als Root ausführen: update-grub2

Nun sollten alle Boot-Fähigen Partitionen im Boot-Menü kommen. Da ich das nicht alleine herausgefunden habe sondern die Debian-Leute fragen musste geht der Tipp ab ins Internet, für euch

Es gibt wohl viele Wege das Problem zu lösen. Eine relativ schmerzlose die nicht zu tief ins System eingreift ist die folgende:

Unter Debian das Paket numlockx installieren (sudo aptitude install numlockx).

Dann folgendes in einer Datei namens .xmodmap im Home ablegen:


keycode 66 = Mode_switch
keycode 26 = e E EuroSign cent
keycode 30 = u U udiaeresis Udiaeresis
keycode 32 = o O odiaeresis Odiaeresis
keycode 38 = a A adiaeresis Adiaeresis
keycode 39 = s S ssharp


Nach einem Neustart von X kam bei meinem Debian dann gleich ein Dialog ob ich die neuen Einstellungen laden möchte.

Danach schreibe ich ä mit CAPSLOCK+a. Für das große Ä muss dann einfach noch SHIFT hinzu. CAPSLOCK selber geht dann nicht mehr, aber eigentlich braucht man das Ding ja eh nie! Ach ja das € geht nun mit CAPSLOCK+e.

Ich habe da mal eine Frage. Jetzt wo sich doch inzwischen in der IT alles um die „Cloud“ dreht stellt sich mir die Frage langsam dringend.

Mein Problem ist simpel und heisst Email.

Ich benutze klassisch irgendwelche gratis Anbieter die mir einen POP3 Account plus hässliches Webmail bieten. Der Nachteil dabei ist, dass ich wegen dem unpraktischen Web-Interface immer noch auf einen lokalen Mailclient angewiesen bin. Dumm nur, dass man dann beim Mail abrufen halt alle Mails vom Anbieter runterlädt und löscht. Das heisst man kann später nicht mehr von sonst irgendwo darauf zugreifen. Das war früher ja kein Problem. Aber in der heutigen Welt wo sich alles immer schneller und verrückter dreht ist es nun ein Problem wenn ich nicht auf alles immer überall Zugriff habe (zumindest auf die Mails).

Nun gut. Viele Leute sagen mir nun ich solle doch einfach Googlemail benutzen. Da scheint das Web-Interface ganz anständig und gut nutzbar zu sein. Auch der Speicherplatz scheint gross genug zu sein, so dass man seine Mails online verwalten kann.

Nun stellt sich mir hier die Frage: Soll ich wirklich meine Seele an den Teufel verkaufen? Kann ich später alle meine Mails problemlos von Google exportieren? Möchte ich wirklich zum absolut gläsernen Bürger werden? Ist dann nicht irgendwann fertig mit Speicherplatz? Möchte ich in Zukunft, dass Google mir sagt wie ich was kommuniziere? Möchte ich ab jetzt nur noch personalisierte Webseiten sehen?

Fragen über Fragen.

Dabei wäre doch die Lösung so einfach! Man wünscht sich doch lediglich einen IMAP-Account der nicht all zu teuer und in guten Händen ist. Mit IMAP kann ich schön mein lokales Mailprogramm nutzen mit allen jemals gesendeten und empfangenen Mails, egal wann das war. Zusätzlich kann ich aber auch mal online über Webmail was senden wenn es gerade Not tut.  Weiss einer wo es das gibt? Kann man sich da beim FSF-Europe oder dem CCC engagieren und dann kriegt man sowas?

Oder soll man gleich ganz auf Mail verzichten? Ist das gar nicht mehr angesagt? Was gibt es da so für Alternativen?

Für Anregungen und Ideen bin ich dankbar.

Drüber malen und „gut is“:

Das opensource Programm ist bei den gängigen Linux-Distros (Ubuntu, Debian, wohl auch die anderen) dabei, ansonsten hier: https://sourceforge.net/projects/xournal/

Eines ist klar, man gewinnt (meistens) an Geschwindigkeit. Denn der Proxy speichert bereits besuchten Netz-Inhalt lokal und stellt in später direkt wieder zur Verfügung.

Nun braucht dieser Proxy natürlich eine zusätzliche Maschine die auch Energie frisst. Andererseits entlastet der Proxy auch die ganze Server und Netzwerk-Infrastruktur im Internet.

Bei meinem eigenen Proxy-Projekt bin ich zum Schluss gekommen das so ein Proxy locker mal eben einen Viertel des Datenvolumens im Internet einspart. Zu sehen ist das anhand der Zahlen in der Grafik (oben links).

Da wird also durchaus eine beachtliche Menge an Daten nicht quer um die halbe Welt geschleust sondern nur lokal ein paar Meter. Ausserdem werden die Server der Anbieter entlastet – was weniger Server bedeutet. Das muss doch was ausmachen?

Hilfreich wäre eine Zahl die sagen würde wie viel Energie ein durchschnittlicher Download pro Byte benötigt. Dann könnte ich schauen wie viel Byte Download ich mit dem Proxy spare und ob/wann er sich damit seinen eigenen Energiebedarf rechtfertigt.

Schlussendlich geht es ja um dezentral gegenüber zentral.

Habt ihr da Ideen oder Quellen? Ich würde mich sehr freuen eine plausible Antwort auf diese Frage zu haben!

Dennoch schreibe ich mal wieder, und erst noch über was ausgelutschtes

Problem welches ich hatte: Debian Squeeze oder Sid (also testing oder unstable) auf einem eeePC ohne CD-Laufwerk installieren.

Das übliche googeln brachte mich vor allem auf handgestricktes wie zum Beispiel hier. Das ging auch ganz toll mit Debian Lenny (also stable). So geht das etwa in kürze (Achtung nicht einfach so ungeprüft laufen lassen):

Wie gesagt, das klappte ganz toll mit stable aber das war es auch schon. Mit Squeeze bin ich ich auf die Schnauze gefallen.

Eine GUI Variante habe ich erst gar nicht gesucht, da der „Startmedien-Ersteller“ von Ubuntu 10.04 das für Debian nicht hingekriegt hat.

Schäme dich Ubuntu, wenn du weiter so deine Wurzeln zertrittst – wo endest du dann?

Nach einigem schimpfen habe ich dann mal bei irc.debian.org im #debian nachgefragt. Und siehe da, es gibt ein super Tool welches alles automatisch macht, inklusive herunterladen.

Es heisst UNetbootin und ist hier zu finden: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

Das ganze ist auch auf den Ubuntu-Repositories zu finden. Zack! – habe ich meinen boot-fähigen USB-Stick, danke!

After hours of coding, debugging and documenting I will now just announce v0.3 of NaYaBoh.

NaYaBoh is an “Internet Proxy Server”, especially designed to enhance Internet access in developing countries. See here for more information.

NaYaBoh has been serving at my place now for quite some month. Also Michel and his Linux friends in Limbe are now using (or testing?) NaYaBoh.

I can actually tell that NaYaBoh works very fine and with no severe bugs. (In my environment…)

So I think it’s now time to slow down the development. I will now try to spread this thing in Cameroon.

I will not try to make any money – but I will try to encourage some guys to make money with it. By selling a ready to run box to others.

I will probably report how this Idea is selling here in Cameroon.

NaYaBoh is your friend because it helps you to ease your internet access. It’s especially designed to enhance internet connections with a slow and unstable link. This is why NaYaBoh has a Pidgin name. I designed this software package while my stay in Cameroon, where this dialect is spoken.

Since we don’t want to understate: NaYaBoh wants to enhance internet access in developing countries!

It does this by:

• being open source software
• using the most popular and easy to get operating system: Ubuntu
• configuring a standard Ubuntu into an internet gateway with a simple click

NaYaBoh adds the following to your computer:

• Internet routing
• DHCP – allows you to connect several computers
• Web-Proxy: Caches web content and delivers it to you faster if you (or anybody in your network) accesses a website again.
• DNS-Cache: Caches URL to IP translations. Helpful if your provider’s DNS is overburden again. (A common problem I faced in Cameroon, btw: use the public DNS of Google „8.8.8.8″)
• Blocking advertisement on websites to lower internet traffic and enhance your surfexpirience by speeding up browsing.
• Blocking update requests from your illegal, virus infected crappy windows machines – so that you can use bandwidth how you intend it.
• Preventing Ubuntu from receiving updates. They are to costly for your bandwidth.
• Several tools which allow you to maintain the system

All you need to have is this:

• Any internet router which gives you DHCP.
• A Computer with two network cards
• Ubuntu 9.04 to install on this computer.
• NaYaBoh to install in your running Ubuntu.

Ok, to give you an idea. The setup should look as in the following picture.

Before installing NaYaBoh on Ubuntu 9.04 you have to run this command in a terminal to solve a bug (internet access needed):

sudo aptitude update

This will update your list of software. Strangely the package dnsmasq is missing if you don’t update. But DON’T install the updates then, if you are asked!

After installing NaYaBo on the computer (just double click to do so) you will find some entries in your menu.

The internet server is not yet ready. First you have to click on „NaYaBoh System Installation“. The following menu should appear.

If you click „Yes“ a progress bar will come to show you how the installation is going.

Now the system should already be ready to use. Connect the internet router to interface zero (eth0, most likely the card on the motherboard) and your switch to the other (eth1).

If you now plug a computer to the switch it should receive automatic an IP address and should be able to browse on the internet. Use the „Proxy Log View“ in the menu of the server to see the web requests live which pass the proxy. The „Proxy Statistics“ are available as soon as the clock has passed a full hour, and from then on are updated every hour.

If you see any „This ad zapped“ while browsing… this means that the blocking of advertisment works
